In the Spotlight: Shellyz Creations

Today in the spotlight, we have Shelly Zink, the artisan behind Shellyz Creations.

We caught up with Shelly and asked her a few questions so you get to know her better. Here is what she said:

What’s the story behind your company?
Shellyz Creations was simply an outgrowth of my need to be creative, paired with an idea to help get me and my daughter organized! We both had jewelry everywhere you can imagine – hangers in the closet, stands, door knobs, etc. It was out of control. When she and her husband moved in with us last fall, we kind of set out on a mission to figure something better out. As I was out one day looking around and brainstorming, I saw a curtain rod with moving hooks, and the rest is history! I came home, made a prototype for both of us, and found it worked well with a little tweaking. My daughter took some pictures and posted them on her facebook and showed it to friends. When she went for a hair appointment, one of the girls in the salon asked about it, and invited me to be part of an arts/crafts show. I hadn’t really thought of selling the jewelry boxes until then, but decided to do it. The response was really wonderful, and many of my friends started requesting them for themselves and to give as Christmas gifts! I couldn’t believe it, but it was so very exciting to make something practical and beautiful and see women respond in such a positive way! I decided to open an Etsy shop, and continue to look for avenues to expand my business and reach more people, and it has been wonderfully exciting. I am meeting some amazing people, and everyone is offering help, ideas, etc. I am very excited to be part of the “handmade” community!

shellyz creationsWhat inspires you?
I am inspired by simplicity and beauty, especially when they are combined. I started simplifying my life several years ago, and continue to look for ways to do so. I love to organize and especially help others get organized! Life can be so chaotic, and helping someone change their home into a sanctuary for them and their family is very rewarding. I love color, and seek to incorporate it into my work as well as my home, to be a source of comfort and of fun! And creating something from nothing is the most exciting of all. My husband has been amazed as I have learned to use power tools, come up with designs, build a custom booth to show my work, etc. I was a stay at home mom who also homeschooled for many years, and my creativity needed to be put on hold for the most part. It is so nice to be creating again, watching something take form and become a work of art people appreciate and enjoy!

shellyz creationsWhat is your favorite product to make?
I only have a few basic designs, but my favorite is the new jewelry cabinet with the wavy frame – it’s in fun colors, and just has a great feel to it. It starts out the most boring to me, and is transformed into the most beautiful, especially when it’s antiqued!

How would you describe your style in 3 words?
My style in three words – hmmm, that’s a hard one! I guess it would be fun and functional, but with a touch of elegance.

In your opinion, what’s the best part of being an entrepreneur?
I can’t describe the feeling that came with my first Etsy customer – the idea that someone would want what I had made, and would be willing to pay for it! It was fun when my friends wanted them, but didn’t compare to having people across the country choose to trust me by purchasing my product from a small picture on their computer screen! It’s even better when people buy in person and express how much they love the products, just where they’ll put it or how they can’t wait to share it with a friend. This is the best part of being an entrepreneur – having full control over everything and seeing it from raw materials all the way through to the customer’s smile!!!

If you were to start all over again, what would you do differently?
I think if I had it to do over again, the only thing I would change is to start sooner. I really love everything about what I am doing, and am so grateful to have the opportunity to do it. I’ve been missing out until now!

shellyz creationsWhat’s next? Any plans for the future?
Right now, I am just trying to get my name out there and grow the business. I would love to have the problem of not being able to fill all the orders on my own, and needing an apprentice, or my own workshop instead of just my garage! I would like to find other ways of helping people, especially women, organize and simplify their lives, and am always considering new ideas and designs toward that end. I would really like to grow the product line to include other areas!

In the Spotlight: LKS Originals

Today in the Spotlight, we have Ms. Lisa Smith, the self-taught jewelry artist and founder of LKS Originals. With a focus on unique and bold statement designs, with attention to detail, each piece is handcrafted in her Colorado studio. Her signature line, Orgone Energy™ Jewelry, incorporates natural gemstones, crystals and various metals to create truly unique, powerful and energetic jewelry.

We caught up with Lisa and asked her a few questions so you get to know her better. Here is our interview:

What’s the story behind your company?
I love all things handmade, and arts and crafts have always been the way I express my creativity.

My husband and I raised 4 beautiful children, and when they were little we were always doing creative craft projects together. The Christmas tree was always full of the ornaments and trinkets that we made.

LKSOriginals3I first went into business selling my crafts when the children were little and I couldn’t “afford” to get a “day job”. (After all, who could pay for daycare for 4 kids!) I made what we all called “dough-bears” – little teddy bear ornaments and figurines made of salt dough – what fun! The business did well for quite a few years, and enabled me to stay at home with my babies and contribute financially.

I discovered polymer clay and the dough-bears became clay-bears, and I found that I could sculpt so many more intricate and tiny things – one of my loves is miniatures – so I was really excited to have this clay to work with! For years our friends and family received gifts of dough-bears and clay creations for the holidays, birthdays, etc.

I adore mosaics as well, but have never sold them. I can’t part with a single piece once I’m done with it, so I have lots of great mosaic pieces around the house…LOL!

So…on to the jewelry…

I love trinkets and baubles as much as the next girl, but had never really thought about making jewelry. One day a coworker came in with some really cool stretch bracelets made of gemstone stick beads. I thought, “well I could make those!” I decided I’d try a few to go with my outfits, and I was hooked. (I became that lady who can’t pass up a bead store!)

Pretty soon I was making necklaces, bracelets and earrings not only for myself but for friends and family who saw and loved what I was wearing! I soon opened my Etsy shop, and a few months later, quit my day job and jumped in with both feet, and haven’t looked back.

My jewelry line continues to expand as I learn new techniques – this is just so much fun! I taught myself how to wire wrap so I could make a pendant out of a very special stone that a very special person gave me. Now friends are hiring me to wrap their stones…pretty cool.

I’m super excited about my newest line, Orgone Energy Jewelry. These pendants, bracelets and earrings are really unique and beautiful, and they carry the power of positive energy and protection. You’ve GOT to check this stuff out!

I’m a proud member of a celebrity gifting organization called The Artisan Group. This is an amazing and supportive group of talented artisans. So far I’ve had the opportunity to gift Renee Zellweger, Brandi Glanville, Khloe Kardashian, Tyra Banks, Amy Poehler and Nia Peeples (She wore the custom necklace I gifted her on an episode of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars!). I’ve also had the opportunity to participate in the celebrity gift lounges for the 2012 Primetime Emmys, the 2012 Country Music Awards and the 2013 Academy Awards.

LKS OriginalsIn my mission statement for LKS Originals I wrote that Oprah Winfrey would wear and love one of my pieces, so maybe these opportunities will help make that happen!

So now you’re all caught up. LKS Originals is still pretty small right now and I do all the work, but the sky’s the limit! (Better get an LKS Original before they’re famous….LOL!)

What inspires you?
I’m inspired by nature, the beauty and energy of natural gemstones, an emotion, a color, a shape, a person — everything in my world can be inspiration!

What is your favorite product to make?
I love making my signature line of Orgone Energy™ Jewelry. I get to use my beloved gemstones, and the energy of these pieces is awesome! I go into a meditative state when making this jewelry…definitely my “Zen” thing!

How would you describe your style in 3 words?
Vibrant, Bold, Energetic!

In your opinion, what’s the best part of being an entrepreneur?

There are so many blessings in being an entrepreneur, but the very best thing is that I call the shots! (Sometimes that’s the worst thing too…LOL)

If you were to start all over again, what would you do differently?
I wouldn’t change a single thing! Everything that I’ve experienced every step of the way, whether negative or positive, is a learning and growing experience…a blessing.

LKSOriginalsAny advice for other entrepreneurs who are just starting?
The best advice I can offer is to believe in yourself, and keep believing, no matter what! … and just GO for it!

What’s next? Any plans for the future?
Anything and everything I can do to continue to grow LKS Originals, and continue to bring smiles with my jewelry! Right now I’m figuring out how to break into the wholesale market…would love to get out there in a really big way! …And, of course, Oprah still needs an LKS Original! 😉

In the Spotlight: Hena Tayeb Photography

Hena Tayeb is a Chicago born Pakistani photographer living in New Jersey. Hena loves to find unusual abstracts and angles allowing the ordinary to appear extraordinary. She zooms in and brings light to the details of things around her. Creating abstracts and bringing attention to textures and patterns. She and her husband, along with their almost three year old boy love to travel enabling her to capture their adventures in bold, high contrast, dramatic photographs.

We caught up with Hena and asked her a few questions so you get to know her better. Here is what she said:

What’s the story behind your company?

Photography was my minor in college.. I was set out to be a copy writer but after a few semesters of photography I couldn’t imagine not doing it. I got married right out of college and moved to a different continent… my birth country. And while I was at home figuring out what to do with myself I uploaded some of my work online and people actually liked it. All the positive comments I got gave me the idea to start selling my work and start what is now Hena Tayeb Photography.

Hena Tayeb PhotographyWhat inspires you?
Everything. I love to find unusual abstracts and angles allowing the ordinary to appear extraordinary. I zoom in and bring light to the details of things around me. Creating abstracts and bringing attention to textures and patterns. My passion for travel enables me to capture my adventures in bold, high contrast, dramatic photographs.

What is your favorite photograph?
That is a difficult one.. each photograph comes with a story with a memory attached. I love the photographs of hands because they were taken in college. I love ‘Sitting Blue’ taken inside a steam train. I love the photographs of lights and chandeliers..

How would you describe your style in 3 words?
Dramatic. Architectural. Travel.

In your opinion, what’s the best part of being an entrepreneur?

The best part about being an entrepreneur is the independence and freedom, being able to follow your heart and vision. Not having to compromise. And as a mom it helps to be able to set my own schedule and have flexibility.
henatayebphotography
If you were to start all over again, what would you do differently?

I would have begun with more confidence. I would have started with Etsy earlier. That was when I really started to make sales and gave me that confidence. It was also then that photography went from being a hobby to my occupation.

Any advice for other entrepreneurs who are just starting?
For entrepreneurs just starting out I’d say be patient. Don’t expect to get a sale the very first day. Keep record of money going in an out.. it seems tedious in the beginning since money seems to be going out more often that coming in but it will be a great help in the future. Social media is your friend… use it to get the word out.

What’s next? Any plans for the future?
More photographs to edit. More travel in the summer meaning more photographs.

In the Spotlight: Funky Planet

Today, in the Spotlight, we have Ms. Adrienne Evans, the talented artisan behind Funky Planet. Funky Planet offers a variety of unique handmade items at very reasonable price. They have a wide range of glass and ceramic autism awareness items. Every single item is hand crafted in the United States.

We caught up with Adrienne and asked her a few questions so you get to know her better.

What’s the story behind your company?
When my seven year old son Jack was diagnosed with a developmental disability I realized that it was no longer feasible to work outside the home because our days were filled with medical and therapy appointments. At the same time, we really needed a second income to pay for all of those services so I started a web store selling glass jewelery that I made in my home studio. After about a year, I started making Fragile X Syndrome awareness jewelery to raise money for Fragile X research. Because many children that have Fragile X also have Autism, I started making Autism awareness Jewelery as well. This has given me a great platform to not only raise awareness but has also provided an opportunity to help raise money for organizations involved in the Autism and Fragile X community.
Funky Planet
What inspires you?
Nature is very inspirational. There is just something beautiful about organic things, the colors, shapes, textures. A lot of the pieces I have made are inspired by nature, trees, leaves, bugs, flowers etc.

What is your favorite product to make?
The awareness jewelery is with out a doubt my favorite. I get to be creative and provide a very important service at the same time effectively combining my two passions.

How would you describe your style in 3 words?
Fun Funky and Eclectic

In your opinion, what’s the best part of being an entrepreneur?
The freedom. I can work eighty hours one week and two the next, that flexibility makes things much easier.

If you were to start all over again, what would you do differently?

I would be more confident and more prepared. I had no idea thousands of people would buy my creations so, in the beginning, I spent a lot of late nights in the studio frantically trying fill orders.

Any advice for other entrepreneurs who are just starting?
I would say if you love it then you should do it. There is nothing better then having a job that you really enjoy.

What’s next? Any plans for the future?
I am in the process of developing an art program for adults with developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injuries. Art can have a huge impact on your quality of life so I am determined to provide that opportunity for as many people as I can.

In the Spotlight: Faith Marcus Designs

Today in the spotlight we have Ms. Faith Marcus, the talented artisan behind Faith Marcus Designs.

Faith was our Guest Blogger last year when she shared her knowledge in “A Guide to Pinterest – Tips on How to Become very Pinteresting“, a post that has been very popular on our website.

We caught up with Faith and asked her a few questions so you get to know her better. Here is what she said.

What’s the story behind your company?
The essence of Faith Marcus Designs is to inspire and empower woman to embrace their inner beauty. Combining classic designs with semi-precious gemstones, chosen for their organic beauty and healing properties, and pairing them with fine metals (sterling silver and gold filled or 14k gold), resulting in individual works of art with heart. There is always a meaning or story behind each and every piece, hence my tagline “Earth’s Esoteric Energy”. My process begins with the gemstones, they are my muse. Once I procure small lots of stones, and am guided via my intuitive process, a new collection will emerge.

Faith Marcus DesignsWhat inspires you?
The list is long, but topping it off is Mother Nature. Nature is really the one true artist/architect in existence. I am also inspired by photography, exotic destinations (such as India and Morocco), and my metaphysical pursuits and practice. I am often moved by poetry and music. Sometimes a collection will just emerge from a mood, or life event! I rarely look at magazines or trends. I am often surprised (and delighted) to find that in trusting my inner guidance and intuition I am generally in synch with what is “happening”, while maintaining my own identity.

What is your favorite product to make?
My favorite item to make would be a gemstone bracelet, combined with metals and charms.

How would you describe your style in 3 words?
Eclectic, bohemian, sophisticated.
Faith Marcus Designs
In your opinion, what’s the best part of being an entrepreneur?
The best part is expressing my creativity and having other people enjoy and appreciate it, and the freedom to call my own shots.

If you were to start all over again, what would you do differently?
Putting systems in place from the beginning. It’s challenging to get organized after the fact! I know as a creative person, it’s sometimes difficult to balance the art and the business end.

Faith Marcus DesignsAny advice for other entrepreneurs who are just starting?
Be true. Be authentic. Find your own style and stick with it. Learn from others, but don’t follow the crowd, or attempt to ride on the coat tails of someone else’s design or success. You need to stand out and be noticed for who you are. Don’t be afraid to take risks, or to make mistakes, it’s all part of the learning and creative process, Learn to ride the waves, and don’t let fear or discouragement keep you from realizing your dreams. Make sure while you are expressing your creativity, that you have spent some time learning some business basics, communication skills and customer service. You must be your own brand ambassador!

What’s next? Any plans for the future?
My logo was designed with future plans to incorporate it into my line as a jewelry component. I am also looking to offer more limited edition collections.

I initially pursued a career in languages (Spanish and Italian) but decided that it wasn’t for me so did an HND in Jewellery and Silversmithing instead. Soul Fire Jewellery was created because I wanted to have the freedom to make my own designs and express my own style.

What inspires you?
I take most of my inspiration from nature and the elements but I am also influenced by fairytales and fantasy stories.

What is your favorite product to make?
I love making bold pendants because they are my favourite type of jewellery to wear!

How would you describe your style in 3 words?
Elegant. Bold. Stylish

In your opinion, what’s the best part of being an entrepreneur?
The freedom to be flexible and work the hours that suit you and to be able to express your own style.

What’s next? Any plans for the future?

Simply to increase sales and expand my customer base, as well as increasing my product range and making lots more lovely things!
