Having the ability to make your own decorations and ornaments provides a rewarding feeling, especially when you get to see your creations on display throughout your house or at a local craft show. Craft shows used to be the place to go to purchase and view crafts that others are making but the internet has made this much easier. With the internet, you can buy arts and crafts that people have made along with the craft supplies needed to make these items. As a long time crafts enthusiast, I would like to share my knowledge with those new to this wonderful hobby.

There are many types of mediums that you can use when crafting. I have worked with paper mache, wood, candles, dolls, and much more. Paper mache has always been my favorite because the possibilities are endless. Paper mache is a crafting technique that allows the artist to construct anything by piecing together loose pieces of paper. Paper mache paste holds the paper together so your creation can take form.

Gathering your supplies

You can find an assortment of paper mache craft supplies online to help you get started. These supply shops can also help spark many creative ideas for your project. Important supplies that you will need are: paintbrushs, strips of newspaper, paper mache paste, and acrylic-sealing spray. A sealing spray is used to finalize your creation by giving it an added layer of protection. There are some great places to buy craft supplies online such as Factory Direct Craft.

Beginning a Project

When beginning any new project, you need to have a clear idea of what you are looking to make. This can help you acquire the right color paper, paint and anything else that fits the idea you would like to create. When beginning your project, lay out your strips of newspaper and create a base model to work with. You want to attach strips of newspaper to this model to reinforce it while it gains the shape you want. One tip to remember is that the newspaper can be rolled into different shapes to create the details of your object. At the end, give your project enough time to dry before painting or adding any accessories to it.

Several Project Ideas

The ideas are endless when it comes to paper mache crafts. You can make anything from a decorative flowerpot to a mask. Paper mache masks look great on a wall, but they can be quite challenging to make depending of the level of detail used.

Animals are another excellent idea to consider when beginning a new project. A finished paper mache dog or cat would look great on a table all year.

As a beginner, a flowerpot would be perfect since it is not as detailed as a mask or an animal. A flowerpot is also a good idea because it works for any skill level. If you are advanced, you can go a step further and create a flower inside the pot.

Here is a cute craft from one of our Flickr members! Her description :

“I’ve just finished my latest Star Wars mini amigurumi – my favourite Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi, all 3.5″ of him.

I made two versions of the character – the old, wise mentor from the original trilogy, and the younger General in the Clone wars. Both wear hooded robes that were crocheted separately.”

To get your child into the spirit of Valentine’s Day, what better craft project than creating a box for family and friends to leave behind their cards. All you need is a simple box, construction paper, and a few school supplies and you’ll have a lovable critter watching over your son or daughter’s Valentine Day cards in no time.

Materials

This craft project for kids requires paper, glue, scissors, a small empty box (like a shoe or Kleenex box), and construction paper (or gift wrap). Some parents purchase wiggly eyes from the local craft shop or can use paper or buttons. It is also optional to use thin cardboard, such as an empty cereal box for this project to make a sturdier critter. Additional materials to enhance the look of the box may include glitter, rhinestones, markers, ribbon, etc.

Instructions

  1. Wrap an empty box with construction paper (or festive gift wrap). Use glue to attach the paper to the box. It’s suggested to use colors and designs associated with Valentine’s Day, but anything will do.
  2. Use a pair of scissors to cut a slit in the top of the box that is large enough to accommodate Valentine’s Day cards.
  3. Creating the body and head of an animal is not as difficult as it seems when you stick with basic shapes. You can make any animal of your choice, but this tutorial will focus on a teddy bear.
  4. To start, draw an oval, egg-shape or circle for the body. Cut out the shape. On another sheet of paper, draw and cut out a smaller oval, egg-shape or circle for the head. Cut out two small circles or ovals to use as ears for your teddy bear.
  5. To strengthen the body parts of the animal, glue the paper body parts to pieces of thin cardboard. If using a cereal box, glue the shapes to the outside of the box. Cut the shapes out.
  6. Glue the head to the top of the body. Attach the ears to the top of the head.
  7. Paper hearts can be used as decoration. Cut out two construction paper hearts to fit inside the ears. A smaller heart will serve as the nose. You can also draw a mouth from the nose. Use old buttons, construction paper circles, or other circular items to make the eyes. Two pieces of elbow macaroni make excellent eyebrows.
  8. Make a bowtie for your animal by cutting out two construction paper triangles of equal size. Place a construction paper heart in the middle of the triangles to form the middle of the bowtie.
  9. Glue your teddy bear to the back of the box.
  10. Cut out a larger heart and write your child’s name on it. Encourage them to decorate the heart or their name if they like. This will be glued to the front of the box.
