Today, we are delighted to put Andrea Doss in the Spotlight! She is the talented artist behind Andralynn Creative Designs.

Inside Andrea’s studio, whimsical, storybook art comes to life. As an artist and a painter, she strives to create something that’s more than just art that hangs on the wall. Using bright colors and unique characters, every piece tells a story of fun and adventure. Of course, what that story may be is up to you.

We asked her a few questions so you get to know her better:

What’s the story behind your company?
Although I have been painting and drawing as long as I’ve been talking and walking, it’s only within the past two years that I really started to focus on my art as a business. It has been a wonderful experience that has gone beyond all my expectations.

What inspires you?
My two girls and their beautiful imaginations are a constant source of inspiration. Together we have fought dragons, hung stars, chased super villains and rescued princes. Every day is a new adventure, a new story and a new idea for a painting.

What is your favorite product to make?
I am in love with painting owls. They have so much expression, personality and charm, I never get tired of finding new mischief for them to get into.

How would you describe your style in 3 words?
Whimsical Storybook Art

In your opinion, what’s the best part of being an entrepreneur?
Being able to set my own hours has been fantastic. I am absolutely not a morning person and I despise alarm clocks.

If you were to start all over again, what would you do differently?
I would keep better records of my expenses from the start, it would make things so much easier come tax time.

Any advice for other artisans who are just starting?
This may sound like a contradiction, but take yourself seriously AND have fun with what you’re doing. You need to love what you’re doing and have confidence in it.

What’s next? Any plans for the future?
Right now, all I offer in my Etsy shop are original paintings. I hope to have prints available, too, sometime this year. I am also working on a children’s picture book (fingers crossed!) — it also should make an appearance in 2013!

These beautiful little evening wristlets are hand knit from recycled sari silk yarn in a rainbow of colors, from a beautiful jade green, to a lovely snow white. The lining is crafted from sari silk remnants or peace silk, depending on my availability. The drawstring strap is a lovely hand dyed silk ribbon.

A perfectly lovely pouch that would do well as a bridesmaid’s gift, small bride’s pouch, wristlet at the prom, or an evening out. They are elegant in their simplicity.

The yarn itself inspired the pouch. I wanted to create something with just the right drape and a slight teardrop shape. I couldn’t be happier with how these jellybean wristlets turned out! You’ll also find that your pouch will gain in softness and beauty the more it is used!

Due to the nature of the yarn, each of these beauties is unique and a little bit different. No two balls of yarn used to craft them are exactly alike. The yarn is fair trade and spun by small women’s coops in Nepal and India. The new silk remnants are gathered, sorted, teased by hand and spun to create the yarn.

Ohio Flint & Argentium Sterling Silver Pendant

The stone in this pendant is Ohio Flint, which is particularly distinctive because of its bright coloration. It’s found only along an 8 mile ridge in Southeast Ohio. For thousands of years, Ohio Native Americans used the flint from Flint Ridge to create stone tools. They traded them with other Native Americans across the continent. Archeologists have found them as far west as the Rocky Mountains and south to the Gulf of Mexico.

I was visiting family in Ohio a few years ago and took a drive across the state to visit Roy Miller, who owns one of the few Ohio Flint quarries. I didn’t get to visit the quarry, but I did see Roy’s work shop. Roy is a flint knapper – he’s well known for the spear points he creates. He uses the ancient technique of shaping tools by painstakingly chipping off flakes of stone. I walked away knowing a little bit about knapping and with some nice pieces of flint. I’ve since been back to see Roy and acquire some more of this beautiful stone.

Each stone is hand-cut, using lapidary techniques of sawing, grinding, sanding & polishing, so each pendant is unique. For a casual look wear it on a leather cord. Or it dresses up beautifully on an Omega chain.

Tarnish-resistant Argentium® Silver was used in creating the pendant.

Continuing the series about fabulous artisans who took their business to the next level and have their handmade product represented by The Artisan Group at the 2012 GBK Oscars Gift Lounge. Enjoy!

TG Bears

TG Bears offers handmade bears for different occasions and different recipients. Each bear is handmade with love. They are 16” tall and have jointed arms and legs. They are stuffed with hypo-allergenic stuffing. Monica, the artisan behind TG Bears, was very excited to have been able to gift three celebrities during 2011. This is Hernando Bear. He was sent to Hillary Duff wearing a blue bow for her baby boy coming in March.

TG Bears is also very involved in charity work, currently working on a large number of bears for Angels4Epilepsy to deliver to children in hospitals. The bears are personalized with the charity’s name, just like all TG bears can be and are all wearing a purple bow – the color for epilepsy.

Monica is excited to be taking part in the GBK Productions Oscar Gift Lounge in February. Even bears love going to exciting places!

Sock Monkey Emporium

A couple of months ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Emma Maudsley, the talented designer behind the Sock Monkey Emporium. You can read her interview here.

The Sock Monkey Emporium is based in the UK and they hand make various animals out of socks. Their main products are monkeys, cats and dinosaurs but they welcome custom orders and have created all kinds of animals from a squid to a duck-billed platypus!! Since starting in 2010, they have been lucky enough to see their products sent out to US actress Jessica Alba and are very excited that their business cards will be in the swag bags given to celebrities by The Artisan Group at the GBK Productions Gift Lounges prior to not only the Golden Globes but also the Academy Awards. 2012 is already brimming with new opportunities and creations with several new products in the pipeline.

Our 2012 Golden Globes Artisan Series continues!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Debrah, the artisan behind DBK Design Arts, earlier this year. We were delighted to hear she would be gifting the celebrities at the Golden Globes in 2012. Here is what she has to say about her participation:

“My gift to the press at the Golden Globes are my gemstone cuffs. They are made of enameled copper mesh, fiber and ribbons, gemstones and pearls, and are lined in the softest leather. I love the contrast of the almost industrial feel of the wire mesh against the soft textile and the luxe, shiny gemstones. My goal is to create elegant and edgy jewelry and accessories that will delight and bring joy to the wearer. I enjoy using materials in unexpected ways to achieve beautiful results, and at it’s heart, my work is always about color! My training is as a painter and I think that is at the heart of all my work, re-imagining painterly techniques in new ways.

Each piece I make is unique and one of a kind. My line includes mesh jewelry, gemstone jewelry, knitted items and hand dyed and felted cotton or wool and silk scarves. I love fiber and most of my work incorporates textiles in some way.

In the end, it is about making beautiful things.”

Recycled Felted Sweater Blanket, Sea to Sky
